There’s nothing quite like a day on the green – especially in a location as breathtaking as the Whitsundays!

A place where the cool, coastal breeze and sunshine complement a 9-hole, 18-tee course, that’s suitable for beginners and experts alike. It’s this very course that awaits you upon the sprawling lawns of our Whitsunday Green golf course!

Whether you are new to golf or have a little experience, it’s always great to pick up a few pro golf tips to help you along in the beginning.

Although we can’t promise you’ll be the next Greg Norman by the end of this read, it is full of golfer-approved pointers to help you have the best experience at our Whitsunday Island golf course.

5 Must Know Tips for Beginner Golf Enthusiasts:

  • Embrace Simple Golf Course Etiquette

If you’ve ever seen the Adam Sandler movie Happy Gilmore, you already know exactly what not to do!

Not only can you apply these to a game of golf at a Whitsunday golf course like Whitsunday Green, but you can remember these any other time you go golfing, since they are almost universal:

  • Noise: golf is definitely a social game, but it’s polite to minimise noise while other players are taking their turn. Despite golf being a relatively calm and relaxing game, a good shot is definitely worth celebrating (just not so loudly that it makes it hard for other players to concentrate)!
  • Speed: some players prefer to take things slow, whilst others (especially more experienced players) believe “a quick game is a good game” when it comes to golf!

Try your best to keep up with the group in front to minimise back-ups behind you, but if that isn’t possible, don’t fret. Simply allow faster groups playing behind you to pass, and wait till all golfers in front of you are a safe distance away before hitting.

  • Greens TLC

Our Whitsunday golf course here at Whitsunday Green was truly built for purpose! This little slice of paradise was designed by a professional golf course architect (Graham Papworth), and is equipped with the latest (and greatest) modern tee mats, couch fairways and more.

That being said, it is always recommended to be mindful of taking care of the course during your round, so that all golfers can enjoy and get the best from their experience on a Whitsunday golf course.

Some tips include:

  • Raking bunkers: use a long sweeping motion to cover your footprints/smooth the surface of the sand dips on your way out
  • Sand divots: these are the chunks of grass that can be cut out of the ground when a golfer makes a swing that has contact with the ground. If available to you, use a little divot sand (a mix of sand and grass seed) to “heal” the divot on the golf range
  • Remove ball marks on the green: sometimes your ball hits the green and runs off into the rough – but not before it leaves its mark.  It takes a few seconds to fix (just use your tee around the edges to lift and smooth the grass), and voila, you’re back to taking your shot!

  • Enjoy the Scenery

Set along Airlie Beach, Whitsunday Green will treat you to the perfect combination of both mountainous and seascape views, complemented by crystal-clear skies and sapphire blue waters.

Whitsunday Green is set across 100 hectares of land, and every inch will remind you of a tropical island escape. Remember to look up every once in a while, and take in the beautiful surrounds between hits!

  • Nail the Basics
  • Stance & Posture: most golfers prefer to stand shoulder width apart with slightly knees bent! You may also wish to try angling your foot slightly to clear your hips easier on the downswing. Widen your stance as needed for longer golf clubs
  • Great Grip: many golfers begin with a grip that is too weak, so begin with a stronger grip to improve your distance (it’s easier to reduce grip strength as you improve, than the other way around)
  • Pick the Perfect Course: playing the tips (aka from the rearmost set of tees) can make the course more difficult than it needs to be and really slow things down too.

Instead, a par 3 course like Whitsunday Green makes for a more fun, faster (and/or competitive) game of golf that lasts under two hours on average (that’s a Goldilocks of “just right” duration wise)!

  • Have Fun!

Naturally, you don’t need reminding – but despite the basic rules and etiquette of golf, the game is a fun one and it’s not hard to have a great time at our Whitsundays golf course.

If you are just learning, don’t worry too much about the rules or your score; just embrace the experience in a stunning setting and enjoy hitting shots.

While you are learning, as long as you are being courteous, it’s all about having fun!
