Whether you’re planning an adventure-packed family holiday, a romantic getaway or even an exciting bucks party in the Whitsundays, you may want to consider including a day at Whitsunday Green into your plans for an unforgettable trip that everyone will love.

At Whitsunday Green, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive and welcoming club that caters to all ages and experiences. We also pride ourselves on our stunning par-3 golf course that’s situated amongst a beautiful mountainous landscape offering the most incredible views (although we can’t take all the credit for that).

In such a beautiful location where you can indulge in tropical weather, blue skies, and golden beaches, how can a day on the green not be the perfect activity to enjoy whilst soaking up the surrounding beauty and fresh air?

However, if you need further convincing, here is everything you need to know about what exactly a par-3 golf course is, why it’s so popular and how everyone can get involved.

First, understand the lingo.

It only takes an afternoon on the green or a conversation with a passionate golf player to know that golfers have a language all to their own – from common terms such as ‘par’ ‘birdie’ and ‘caddy’ to more uncommon terms such as ‘mulligan’ ‘snowman’ and ‘dogleg’.

The good news is –  you don’t have to know them all to enjoy a great game of golf, however, they’re such great words that you may want to consider expanding your golfing vocabulary (who doesn’t want to boast about a birdie?). Whilst knowing the lingo doesn’t necessarily make you a better golfer, it’s good to know a few basics.

To explain what makes a par-3 golf course so great, let’s first explain what it is. Par is the number of strokes that an experienced golfer would be expected to take to complete the hole. The par number for a hole always includes two putts on the green.

Birdie means completing the hole in one less stroke than the par. Bogey is completing the hole in one more stroke than the par and double bogey is completing the hole in two more strokes than the par (catch the trend?).

Whether you’re describing your par as a ‘bogey’ or a ‘birdie’ all depends on your golfing experience, regardless, it’s a golden opportunity to throw around some great golfing terms!

What is a par-3 course?

Typically a course is made up of par 3s, 4s, and 5s, meaning the distance between the tee and the green varies in distance. As the name suggests, a 3-par course is made up of only par 3 holes which usually have shorter distances and fewer swings before putting on the green.

The course at Whitsunday Green is made up of 18 holes with distances ranging from 18 metres to 87 metres and a total distance of 1,200 metres – perfect for a fast-paced game and an easy stroll on the green.

Whitsunday Green was designed by professional golf course architect Graham Papworth to be equally challenging and fun for both experienced players and beginners. With less travelling between swings, the course naturally allows for more putting on the green, allowing you to sharpen up your aim with both long and short-distance shots.

The benefits of a par-3

For many players, par three holes are the most exciting and entertaining holes to play in golf. The shorter distances between holes keep everyone engaged in a fun and fast-paced game, plus there’s always the chance of a magical hole-in-one!

A par-3 golf course is certainly one of the most inclusive ways of playing golf. Ideal for getting the whole family together for a game, or a friendly tournament amongst friends for some quality time with a competitive edge. Since everyone can play the same course from the same tees, it’s equally as rewarding and exciting for beginners whilst still being fairly competitive.

Another benefit of a par-3 course is that it can be completed quicker than other courses. A game at the Whitsunday Green can usually be finished within 2 hours, leaving just enough time to warm up on the driving range beforehand, and cool off with a beverage afterward at our Clubhouse Cafe.

Whether or not you’re a golf enthusiast, an eager beginner, or just looking to try something new, the par-3 course at Whitsunday Green is an even playing field where everyone can enjoy a fun day on the green amongst spectacular surroundings.
