If you have ventured to The Whitsundays before, then you already know how special this location is. If you are yet to visit, then let it be said that this location really is unlike any other!
You may have set foot upon white sandy beaches and swum in turquoise waters before, but it is a unique combination of incredible features that sets Whitsunday tourism apart (as you’re about to discover below):
Location
The Whitsundays region is home to not just one, but a host of over fifty beautiful islands in the North of Queensland, Australia.
Situated between Mackay and Townsville, the area provides easy access from many cities and regional capitals and is accessible via car, train, plane and boat (depending where you are hailing from).
It’s the ideal locale for a day trip if you’re holidaying locally, or an extended getaway, since everything you need for a relaxing and enjoyable stay can be found with ease (warning: you probably won’t want to leave)!
There is a lovely charming small community feeling that carries through to the friendly local atmosphere when visiting, and the area is renowned for magnificent coastal and mountainous settlements, including the famed Airlie Beach and Cannon Valley.
Weather
One of the biggest draw cards for visiting The Whitsundays is undoubtedly the weather.
Even during winter, this tropical location offers average daytime temperatures ranging between a warm 23-30 degrees year-round.
Various times throughout the year mark the best weather conditions for sailing and chances of spotting humpback whales as they migrate, but any time of year is ideal for exploring the island, partaking in water activities and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere this location is known for.
Unmatched Atmosphere, Nature and Scenery
You’ll notice right away that nobody rushes; instead, you will easily adapt to “island time” – which prioritises relaxation and taking time to enjoy the surroundings.
It certainly helps that those surroundings include some of the most lust-worthy, beautiful beaches, magnificent mountains and hillsides and that food, drinks and recreation nearby (including our golf course!)
Beaches & Water-based Activities
Of course, Tourism in The Whitsundays goes hand-in-hand with enviable beaches and enticing water-based activities.
The seagrass beds around the northern bays support a diverse range of marine life, and swimming and snorkelling will allow you to glimpse the gorgeous underwater ecosystem. Best of all – the sea is warm and crystal clear in many areas.
You can also explore flowing waterfalls and swimming holes (we recommend Cedar Creek Falls) that promise both a stunning sight and refreshing dip.
Now to the beaches themselves: Whitehaven Beach was rated in 2010 internationally, as the top eco-friendly beach, and as the name suggests, it has pristine white sands that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Airlie Beach is another must-visit spot, with a gentle sea breeze and perfect swimming and sailing conditions.
It’s not unusual to spot turtles, schools of tropical fish and even dugongs and whales during a Whitsunday holiday – if you’ve got kids, we promise they’ll love it.
Land Activities, Food, Drink & Other Things to Do
There are still so many options to relax, unwind, soak up the sunshine, or cool down, that don’t involve the ocean!
Airlie Beach (as an example) has a lively main strip with nightlife, live music, bustling cafes, restaurants, bars, other specialty shops and more.
The Cannon Valley area is close to two major shopping centres, prestigious marinas, scenic boardwalk and a range of other necessities (food, drink, medical centre, retail therapy opportunities).
Some other features of Whitsunday tourism you can take advantage of include:
- Local weekend goods and crafts markets
- Reef and sea cruises
- Seaplane trips
- Fishing
- Sailing
- Water-skiing and jet skiing
- Hosted whale watching
- National Park bush walks (native wildlife included)
- Great Barrier Reef half or full day trips
We might be a little biased, but a round of Par 3 golf at Whitsunday Green is also not to be missed if you want to do something that’s great social and great fun with friends and family!
You might already be an avid golfer, but you don’t have to be to play at Whitsunday Green. Our architecturally designed course offers an exciting challenge for all golf levels and ages (yes, young or old!) – whether you want something competitive or more relaxed.
The greens overlook a little slice of Whitsunday paradise, and when you’re finished why not quench your thirst or appetite at our Clubhouse Café, where you can enjoy your drinks with a view!
